I encourage students to begin studying theory as soon as they begin their Grade 1 piano work — the exam board makes Grade 5 Theory or Practical Musicianship a pre-requisite for moving on to Grade 6 (the other alternative is a Grade 5 Jazz exam).
I use the ABRSM Discovering Theory books - it's a great series, one grade per book, and takes students right up to Grade 5 in a thorough way.
I also offer online theory lessons to prepare students for ABRSM theory exams and have a 100% pass rate with most students achieving merit or distinction.
“I was really impressed with the way
in which Kate very quickly assessed my children and was able to pin
point their weaknesses and help them to feel confident and ready for
their exam … She is patient and has
great ways to make music theory understandable. ”
